The Hunger Games and The Counselor - DVD's out this week

How often is the sequal better than the original film? The the case of the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire really ups the ante with this sequal. With director Francis Lawrence taking over the helm, this film includes much more of the politics, the violence (though of course, not Battle Royale standards), and a cliff hanger that leaves you screaming at the screen for more. Since seeing this film, I've catched up the first film and read all of the books, and I for one can understand while they're splitting the third book into two films, as there is a hell of a lot going on in it, and they'll need the time just to explain it all. If you're a fan of the books, this film won't disappoint, and if you've not seen the first film, don't bother with it, just skip straight to this one.

Also starring the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, this film is well worth a watch, and I am looking forward quite alot to the next two films.

What happens when you get a great director, a great writer, and a set of great actors? Well, you'd think it would be good, wouldn't you. Unfortunately, The Counselor is a massive misfire right from the start, and the few stand out parts are mired amongst the awful dialogue. I recommend this film only if you're a massive fan of anyone involved in it, or you like sex jokes about bottom feeders.
