Captain Phillips and Filth out to buy NOW!

Another week, another round of films out for us to enjoy. This week is a pretty good week for DVD buying, as two of our favourite films from last year have finally been released. First up is the winner of Film of the Year from our End of Year Award Show, Captain Phillips. Up for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Barkhad Abdi (in a fanatastic debut, mirrored by the equally brilliant Lupita Nyong'o whose up for Best Supporting Actress for Twelve Years A Slave), Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks in a fight to protect his ship and crew from Somalian pirates. With complex characters, mountains of tension and a ending that will leave you weeping, this film more than deserved our Film of the Year. Much recommended.

Now to a film that is vastly different, but equally brilliant, to Captain Phillips. Filth was up for two gongs at our End of Year Award Show, our Under the Radar award and Best Actor award (lost to Robot and Frank and Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln respectively), and impressed both of us with its brutal storytelling. With James McAvoy playing a grossly depraved manic-depressive policeman, he is provinh himself to be quite the actor. Not for the faint hearted, but for those of you brave enough to watch it to the end, you won't be disapointed.

Also out this week is Metallica Through The Never, which we didn't do a review of, but Mr Dave Green has one up on his page which you can ogle your eyes at here.
